Daphne Roubini playfully named ”First Lady of Uke” sings and plays the Ukulele in her band Black Gardenia. When not teaching the next generation of ukulele virtuosos, Daphne, and Andy lead Black Gardenia, the Vancouver-based five-piece whose ‘London Jazz meets Americana’ sound has delighted festival and club audiences on two continents.
With their unique, darkly-relaxed blend of vintage jazz, country, folk and blues from the 20′s, 30′s and 40′s, Black Gardenia take listeners on a journey to an age where cool meant classy and noir was the norm.
“Daphne Roubini’s voice flows over you like golden syrup. Black Gardenia is that perfect balance between Louisiana Jazz and a hazy Maui afternoon.”
Fleur Cooper, CITR radio
“A relaxed approach to old school jazz…with some of the hippest Ukulele that you can hope to hear.”
Ken Pickering, Artistic Director and Co-Founder, TD Canada Trust Intl Jazz Festival
“The musical equivalent of taking a bath in a barrel of finely aged bourbon.”
Robert Collins, Music Correspondent, CTV BC
